What ever happend to the Love Letter?

Love can be expressed in a myriad of different methods, but the most timeless and most treasured will always remain the classic love letter. It reflects the current state of romance through the written word.

The idea of writing love letters is widely known, but I am left wondering… how many people actually write them anymore?  How many people actually put ink to paper as a way to confess all they feel for the one they love?

I personally adore this idea.  I can’t think of many things more romantic than a handwritten love letter that can be stored in a treasure chest for decades, to be remembered, retrieved, and relived, time after time.

One of my favorites…

I wake filled with thoughts of you. Your portrait and the intoxicating evening which we spent yesterday have left my senses in turmoil.

Sweet incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have on my heart! Yielding to the profound feelings which overwhelm me, I draw from your lips, from your heart a love which consumes me with fire?

Until then, mio dolce amor, a thousand kisses; but give me none in return, for they set my blood on fire. – Napoleon Bonaparte

  1. When we were going through the Visa process to move to England we had to hand over our letters we wrote to each other. It was weird having someone read our letters.

Interesting to see that Napoleon had a softer side.
